Imposter Syndrome In Dental School, what really is it?

Dental school is can be seen as kind of demanding, competitive, and intense environment and many students can think “Do I really belong here?”. That feeling has a name, known as imposter syndrome, and if you've ever felt that way before don't worry as you are not alone.

Imposter syndrome is the belief that your achievements are due to luck rather than ability, and with that comes the lack of self belief. In dental school, it often shows up during clinical time, exams, or when comparing yourself to peers who seem effortlessly confident. You might feel behind, inadequate, or like everyone else understands things faster than you do, even if you put in twice the effort.

Here’s the truth that many don't know, feeling like an imposter is incredibly common in dental school. You are really surrounded by high achieving students in a fast paced environment where mistakes feel major and pressure is constant!

The key thing to remember is that struggling does not mean you are failing, it means you are learning, this can be hard to wrap your head around initially.

Remember, you earned your place at dental school, admission committees don’t just choose students by accident. Every difficult time, missed diagnosis, or tough feedback session is part of building competence, not proof that you don’t belong.

Confidence in dentistry is developed through repetition, lots of reflection through a growth mindset, and time; not overnight perfection, or a 1 time effort.

When imposter syndrome thoughts creep in, try just to take a second to pause and challenge them. Look at your progress throughout the years, not just your gaps that are noticeable to you at the given moment. Talk to your peers, mentors, or tutors, and you’ll often find they feel the same way! Most importantly, try to be kind to yourself, growth can feel uncomfortable because it takes you beyond your comfort zone.

Dental school isn’t all about being flawless, it’s about becoming capable and being that reflective practitioner. If you feel like an imposter, it’s often a sign you’re pushing yourself forward! And in doing so, you are exactly where you are meant to be!
